Carl White’s Life in the Carolinas

Filmed in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2001, this is a romantic comedy starring Jack Black and Gwyneth Paltrow. Check out Jack Black’s first leading role in this award-winning film, that was recognized for its profound and thought-provoking twist on classic love stories.

Hal (Jack Black) develops a new outlook on beauty after a chance encounter with life coach Tony Robbins. He learns to see people’s inner beauty, leading to an uplifting and hilarious journey to finding true love.

While this film is indeed a romantic comedy, critics feel that the comedy aspect comes from a negative view of individuals who suffer from obesity. Gwyneth Paltrow stated “The first day I tried the fat suit on, I was in the Tribeca Grand and I walked through the lobby. It was so sad. It was so disturbing. No one would make eye contact with me because I was obese. I felt humiliated.” She has frequently said that she wished she had not done the movie because she felt she was adding to the insensitivity that the film was displaying.
